*Two buttons, one person.* LinkedIn makes you pick between Follow and Connect, and most people click without knowing what they chose.

The difference decides who sees your posts, who can message you, and who becomes a lead. In this post, you'll learn:

- the core difference, in one table;
- why some profiles show Follow — or, in 2026, Message — instead of Connect;
- when to follow and when to connect, for networking and lead gen;
- and how to export both audiences into a spreadsheet.

## Follow vs Connect: the core difference

**Connecting is mutual, following is not.** A connection request needs the other person to accept; once they do, you're 1st-degree: you see each other's posts and can message each other directly.

Following is one-way. You subscribe to someone's public posts, no approval needed, and they don't see yours — [LinkedIn's own help page](https://www.linkedin.com/help/linkedin/answer/a702683) sums it up: following lets you learn from someone's content, connecting builds a two-way relationship.

![Two LinkedIn profiles side by side: a 2nd-degree profile with the blue Connect primary button, and Bill Gates' follow-primary profile with the + Follow button](https://d37gzvgyugjozl.cloudfront.net/linkedin_follow_vs_connect_montage_connect_vs_follow_e5bd9996e1.png "width=2034;height=800")

Here's the whole thing in one table:

|  | Follow | Connect |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Direction | One-way | Two-way (mutual) |
| Approval needed | ❌ | ✅ they accept your invite |
| You see their posts | ✅ | ✅ |
| They see your posts | ❌ | ✅ |
| Direct messaging | ❌ [InMail](https://www.lobstr.io/blog/linkedin-inmail) / Open Profile | ✅ free |
| Network degree | Unchanged (2nd/3rd) | 1st degree |
| Limit | ♾️ unlimited | 30,000 connections |

People say "followers vs connections" for the same question — same answer, and the overlap runs one way: every new connection automatically follows you, but a follower isn't a connection until you both agree.

That's the principle. Now the details that actually change your daily LinkedIn life:

## All the functional differences

The table above hides four practical consequences. They matter the moment you post, message, or prospect.

### Who sees what in the feed

Your posts land in the feeds of your followers — which includes all your connections, since connections auto-follow. LinkedIn even pushes out-of-network posts into your feed, with an inline + Follow button next to the author's name:

![LinkedIn feed post from a 2nd-degree member with the inline + Follow button next to his name](https://d37gzvgyugjozl.cloudfront.net/linkedin_follow_vs_connect_feed_follow_suggestion_d42b4fbac9.png "width=1162;height=1348")

Follow someone without connecting and it stays asymmetric: their content reaches you, yours never reaches them.

### Who can message whom

Direct messaging is a 1st-degree privilege. Follow someone and the DM box stays locked: LinkedIn will push you toward [InMail](https://www.lobstr.io/blog/linkedin-inmail), the paid Premium workaround.

![Free direct message box open with a 1st-degree LinkedIn connection](https://d37gzvgyugjozl.cloudfront.net/linkedin_follow_vs_connect_message_1st_free_e8c9db6e29.png "width=2616;height=1376")

For a stranger, that same box costs money. Connect, and messaging is free in both directions — which is why outbound people spend their weekly invites on prospects instead of just following them.

### Degrees, endorsements, and contact info

Connecting moves someone into your [1st degree](https://www.lobstr.io/blog/linkedin-connection-degrees), which unlocks the rest: skill endorsements, recommendations, and usually their [email address in Contact info](https://www.lobstr.io/blog/export-linkedin-contacts).

Followers get none of that. They're an audience, not a network.

Both lists live in the same place, and it's worth knowing where:

![LinkedIn Following and Followers page under Manage my network, showing the Following tab with 62 people followed](https://d37gzvgyugjozl.cloudfront.net/linkedin_follow_vs_connect_following_followers_page_5804a61a37.png "width=2710;height=1368")

### The caps are wildly different

Connections stop at 30,000 — a hard, official cap. Followers are unlimited, which is the whole growth logic behind follow-first profiles. Full numbers in our [LinkedIn limits breakdown](https://www.lobstr.io/blog/linkedin-limits).

> Connections auto-follow you, but the reverse move exists too: you can unfollow a connection to mute their posts and stay connected. They are not notified.

So why do some profiles not even offer you the choice? That's the question everyone actually googles:

## Why some profiles show "Follow" instead of "Connect"

Three mechanisms flip that button — and two of the five top-ranking guides on this query still explain it with a feature LinkedIn killed in 2024.

### 1. They set Follow as their primary button

Any member can choose Follow as their profile's main action, in Settings & Privacy > Visibility > Followers > "Make follow primary".

This used to be bundled in Creator mode. LinkedIn [retired the Creator mode toggle in March 2024](https://www.linkedin.com/help/linkedin/answer/a5999182) and folded its tools into every profile — the follow-primary switch survived the funeral. If a guide tells you to "turn on Creator mode", it's [two years out of date](https://www.socialmediatoday.com/news/linkedins-removing-creator-mode-option/706585/).

![LinkedIn Settings, Visibility, Followers: the Make follow primary toggle switched on](https://d37gzvgyugjozl.cloudfront.net/linkedin_follow_vs_connect_settings_follow_primary_ea6ea93550.png "width=2902;height=1474")

Creators use it because followers are unlimited and low-friction. Bill Gates shows Follow, and the counter under his name reads 40,664,617 followers.

![Bill Gates' LinkedIn profile with + Follow as the primary button and 40,664,617 followers](https://d37gzvgyugjozl.cloudfront.net/linkedin_follow_vs_connect_gates_follow_annotated_267db87edd.png "width=1980;height=1210")

### 2. They hit the 30,000-connection cap

At 30,000 connections, LinkedIn flips the switch for you: ["Follow will become the default option on your profile"](https://www.linkedin.com/help/linkedin/answer/a567364). The member can't accept new invites unless they remove old connections.

The wall is real enough that super-connectors budget deletions. This founder removes 200 connections a week to make room, and is petitioning [LinkedIn's new CEO](https://www.cnbc.com/2026/04/22/microsofts-linkedin-makes-executive-daniel-shapero-its-new-ceo.html) for a 50,000 tier:

![LinkedIn post by Moshe Neuman: back at 30,000 connections, deleting 200 connections a week to make room, asking LinkedIn to raise the cap to 50,000](https://d37gzvgyugjozl.cloudfront.net/linkedin_follow_vs_connect_embed_neuman_30k_05f1e5e425.png "width=1030;height=1326")

So a Follow button on a big account isn't (only) vanity — it's often the [30,000 cap](https://www.lobstr.io/blog/linkedin-limits) at work.

### 3. New in 2026: you might see "Message" instead of both

I checked this myself in September 2026, from my Sales Navigator account: I opened four out-of-network profiles, and all four led with **Message** as the big blue primary button. Connect wasn't gone — it was buried under "More".

![Out-of-network 3rd-degree LinkedIn profile showing Message as the primary button — no Connect in sight](https://d37gzvgyugjozl.cloudfront.net/linkedin_follow_vs_connect_fortnow_message_primary_089c5c2efb.png "width=2534;height=1290")

On Premium accounts, LinkedIn increasingly leads with its paid messaging on out-of-network profiles — not on every profile, but on enough that prospecting users noticed the shift:

![Reddit r/linkedin thread, July 2026: has LinkedIn changed the profile action buttons? 80-90% of out-of-network profiles now show Message instead of Connect](https://d37gzvgyugjozl.cloudfront.net/linkedin_follow_vs_connect_embed_reddit_message_button_8e9d6ed8a9.png "width=1552;height=1118")

Whatever the button says, you can still connect. But should you? Depends what the relationship is for:

## When to follow vs when to connect

The honest framework, whether you're networking or [prospecting](https://www.lobstr.io/blog/linkedin-outreach): follow to learn and warm up, connect to talk and sell.

Real users land on the same split:

![Reddit r/linkedin thread: When should I Follow and when I should Connect?](https://d37gzvgyugjozl.cloudfront.net/linkedin_follow_vs_connect_embed_reddit_when_follow_connect_fbdfa0df44.png "width=1548;height=554")

The top reply nails the mental model: "Follow is like X/Twitter. Connect is like Facebook." One is an async subscription, the other a mutual agreement.

| Follow when… | Connect when… |
| --- | --- |
| you want someone's insights, not their attention — thought leaders, competitors, ex-bosses | you actually know them — colleagues, clients, people you met at events |
| they're follow-primary or at the cap, and an invite would sit pending forever | you need the DM channel, their contact info, or an intro to their network |
| you're warming up a prospect: follow, comment for two weeks, then invite | they're a qualified lead: 1st degree is where [search](https://www.lobstr.io/blog/linkedin-search-ultimate-guide), messaging, and exports all get better |

One budget rule ties it together: you get roughly 100 connection requests a week, and unlimited follows. Spend invites on people who'll answer; follow everyone else while you warm them up. It's also gentler on your [SSI score](https://www.lobstr.io/blog/linkedin-ssi-score) than firing off invites that never get accepted.

I'm guilty too: my own Sent tab currently holds 27 pending invitations, quietly aging.

![LinkedIn Manage invitations Sent tab with 27 pending people invitations, three of them sent 2-3 weeks ago](https://d37gzvgyugjozl.cloudfront.net/linkedin_follow_vs_connect_pending_invites_f9fc58ef96.png "width=2412;height=1266")

And if you're qualifying prospects at volume — deciding who's even worth one of those 100 invites — that's a scraping job, not a clicking job.

![lobstr.io LinkedIn Leads Scraper: scrape all leads from LinkedIn People Search with 60+ data points, verified emails and phones included](https://d37gzvgyugjozl.cloudfront.net/linkedin_follow_vs_connect_packshot_linkedin_leads_scraper_df3b9bc241.png "width=2522;height=1354")

[Scrape LinkedIn leads at scale →](https://www.lobstr.io/store/linkedin-leads-scraper)

Decided to connect, but their profile only offers Follow? Two clicks fix it:

## How to connect when it only shows Follow

The official path, per [LinkedIn's help page](https://www.linkedin.com/help/linkedin/answer/a523224):

1. Open the member's profile;
1. Click **More** in the introduction section;
1. Select **Connect** from the dropdown;
1. Add a note (or don't), and send.

![Out-of-network LinkedIn profile with the More dropdown open: the Connect option sits in the menu, below Follow](https://d37gzvgyugjozl.cloudfront.net/linkedin_follow_vs_connect_more_menu_connect_39a1d9a8ab.png "width=2484;height=1076")

On mobile it's the same dance: More icon, then Connect, or "Personalize invite" if you want to add a message.

Two things happen silently when you do this. You start following them immediately, while the invite waits. And if they decline, you keep following unless you manually unfollow — LinkedIn never tells you it was declined.

Sometimes Connect is missing even under More. Usually your email isn't confirmed, they're outside your 3rd-degree network, or a cap was hit on either side.

![Reddit r/linkedin thread: why is there only a Follow button and no Connect option under the More menu?](https://d37gzvgyugjozl.cloudfront.net/linkedin_follow_vs_connect_embed_reddit_no_connect_under_more_58ef620485.png "width=1560;height=1202")

One more edge case: for some Follow-button members, LinkedIn asks you to enter their email address to prove you know them.

> Want the flip side — people following YOU instead of flooding your invite tab? Turn on "Make follow primary" in Settings > Visibility > Followers. Creators and near-the-cap accounts do exactly this.

Follow or connect, you end up with the thing that actually matters: an audience. Here's the part most of these guides skip — getting it out of LinkedIn.

## Followers & connections: an audience you can export

Followers and connections aren't trophies. They're a list of people who chose you — names, jobs, companies — and LinkedIn lets that list rot inside a tab nobody opens.

I exported both sides of ours, live, for this article.

### Export a company page's followers

Our lobstr.io company page shows 1,113 followers as of September 16, 2026. LinkedIn only shows that list to page admins.

![lobstr.io LinkedIn company page admin dashboard showing 1,113 followers](https://d37gzvgyugjozl.cloudfront.net/linkedin_follow_vs_connect_company_page_1113_followers_7baeb7513e.png "width=2434;height=1144")

But Sales Navigator has a lead filter for it, under Buyer intent: "Following your company". The screen rounds the count to "1K+ results" — the underlying search API reports 1,102. That's 99% of the follower base, searchable as leads.

![Sales Navigator lead search with the Following your company filter on, showing 1K+ results with Follows your company badges](https://d37gzvgyugjozl.cloudfront.net/linkedin_follow_vs_connect_salesnav_following_company_filter_29218f2c63.png "width=2894;height=1464")

I ran that search through the [Sales Navigator Leads Scraper](https://www.lobstr.io/store/sales-navigator-leads-scraper) — from Claude, via our MCP server, without opening a browser:

```bash
claude mcp add --transport http lobstr https://mcp.lobstr.io/mcp
```

![Claude Code prompted to run the lobstr Sales Navigator Leads Scraper on the Following your company search and export the leads to a CSV](https://d37gzvgyugjozl.cloudfront.net/linkedin_follow_vs_connect_claude_mcp_prompt_9b6169906d.png "width=1384;height=994")

Prefer the terminal? Install the CLI, paste the same search URL from your browser, and the export lands in a CSV:

```bash
pip install lobstrio
lobstr go sales-navigator-leads-scraper \
  "<your Sales Navigator search URL>" \
  -k url -o followers.csv
```

The run came back with 1,101 profiles in 2 hours 14 minutes — and 467 of them with an email, 455 flagged valid by the enrichment. That's 42% of a follower list turned into contactable leads.

![lobstr.io dashboard: the Sales Navigator Leads Scraper run done with 1,101 unique results in 2 hours 14 minutes, live log showing scraped profiles and found emails](https://d37gzvgyugjozl.cloudfront.net/linkedin_follow_vs_connect_dashboard_followers_run_79d7fd6b11.png "width=2174;height=1470")

Open the file and the vanity metric becomes rows you can sort, filter, and mail:

![The followers export open in Google Sheets: full name, position, location, degree, email, email status and LinkedIn profile URL columns over 1,101 rows](https://d37gzvgyugjozl.cloudfront.net/linkedin_follow_vs_connect_sheet_followers_export_09668e1c79.png "width=2846;height=1398")

Bucketed by job title, here's who actually follows a scraping company:

![Bar chart: who follows a scraping company on LinkedIn — 45% engineers and developers, 6% founders and C-level, then data, sales, ops and marketing roles, from 1,101 lobstr.io followers](https://d37gzvgyugjozl.cloudfront.net/linkedin_follow_vs_connect_chart_followers_roles_ed085a5468.png "width=1392;height=887")

The full dataset is in [this public Google Sheet](https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1P7ygwBXcqf1cSkjx5RJfFgGr3pRghOh1hu_GmjQKFlc/edit?usp=sharing) (emails partially masked). The same trick works on any company whose followers you manage — details in our [company followers export guide](https://www.lobstr.io/blog/export-linkedin-company-followers), and for competitors' audiences there's a [workaround via their post engagers](https://www.lobstr.io/blog/steal-competitors-audience-linkedin).

### Export your own connections

Your 1st-degree network exports the same way — same scraper, one filter change: set Relationship to "1st degree connections" and the search becomes your own network. I ran it on mine next: 803 connections, with an email for 497 of them — a 62% hit rate, versus 42% on the followers list.

That beats LinkedIn's native CSV export, which famously ships with empty email columns — the [full contacts-export walkthrough is here](https://www.lobstr.io/blog/export-linkedin-contacts).

All of it reads public or 1st-degree data through your own account — the [legal line](https://www.lobstr.io/blog/is-linkedin-scraping-legal) sits exactly where you'd expect it.

That's the full loop: understand the buttons, use them deliberately, export the result. Questions people still ask:

## FAQ

### How can I see who I'm following and who I'm connected with?

**My Network > Manage my network**: "Connections" lists your 1st degree, "Following & followers" lists both follow directions. Direct URL: linkedin.com/mynetwork/network-manager/people-follow/followers.

### Can someone follow me without me knowing?

**Yes — following needs no approval**. LinkedIn usually sends a "started following you" notification, but there's nothing to accept or block, and a missed notification means you'd never notice. Your [followers list](https://www.lobstr.io/blog/linkedin-people-directory) is the only reliable check.

### Can I see who unfollowed me on LinkedIn?

**No — LinkedIn never notifies unfollows** and shows no history. The only reliable method: export your followers list on a schedule and diff the files — the exact workflow from the section above.

### What's the difference between followers and connections?

Same as follow vs connect, seen from your side: **connections are mutual, followers are one-way**. Connections cap at 30,000, followers don't. Every connection is also a follower; most followers are not connections.

### Do connections count as followers?

**Yes — connections auto-follow**, both ways, so your follower count always includes your connections. Unfollowing them later removes the feed subscription, not the connection.

### Can I hide my follower count?

**Not really — Follow primary shows the count** on your profile. Keep Connect primary and LinkedIn displays your connection count instead, capped at "500+" no matter how far past 500 you are.

### Is there a limit to how many people I can follow?

**No — following is unlimited**, per LinkedIn's [network size page](https://www.linkedin.com/help/linkedin/answer/a567364). The 30,000 cap and the roughly 100 invites a week apply to connections only.

### Why can't I connect with someone at all — no Connect even under More?

Four usual suspects: your email address isn't confirmed, they're beyond your 3rd-degree network, one of you is at the connection cap, or they've [restricted invites entirely](https://www.reddit.com/r/linkedin/comments/1mw2tmx/why_is_there_only_a_follow_button_and_theres_no/). **Confirm your email first** — it fixes more cases than you'd think.

## Final thoughts

Follow is for learning, connecting is for talking. Spend your 100 weekly invites on people you want answers from, follow the rest for free, and remember the button you see is a setting, a cap, or — since 2026 — a Premium upsell.

Then treat the result as data: 1,113 people chose to follow our page, and it took one scraper run to turn that vanity metric into a working lead list.

Want to test it? [Follow lobstr.io on LinkedIn](https://www.linkedin.com/company/lobstrio) — you'll show up in next month's export. Or connect with [me](https://www.linkedin.com/in/sasha-bouloudnine-51908286) directly: unlike InMail, I'm free.
